For this exclusive edition, we paired ITO Bindery's gray Japanese paper with a black recycled mount, creating a Drawing Pad designed to earn its place on your desk. Instead of being put away between ideas, it stays in sight and within reach, ready before you even need it.

And when inspiration does arrive, the gray surface changes what happens on the page. Dark lines stand out without the starkness of white paper, shading takes on greater depth, and white can become a highlight of its own. Even a rough sketch can immediately feel more considered.

Gray Japanese paper sits against the black recycled mount, turning the exposed first sheet into part of the Drawing Pad's visual identity rather than something normally hidden beneath a cover.
Even before you make the first mark, the Drawing Pad already looks like it belongs on your desk.
Gray gives every mark a middle ground to work from. Instead of beginning with white as the brightest point on the page, you can build in both directions, adding darker tones for depth and lighter marks for highlights.
Gray isn't simply the background. It becomes part of how the drawing takes shape.
No cover. No opening ritual. No extra step between the idea and where you put it down. The first sheet is already exposed, so when something occurs to you, your very first action can be to create.
The sturdy recycled black mount doubles as its own drawing surface. Thick and firm enough to sketch against, take it where inspiration finds you, even without a desk in sight.
The only surface you need is already the one in your hands.
Choose the size that fits what you're making. A6 is compact enough to keep close for quick ideas, sketches, and lists. A5 gives you more room for everyday notes and developing ideas further. A4 opens up the surface for larger compositions, detailed sketches, and ideas that need more room to unfold.
Each sheet is microperforated at the header and tears away cleanly, leaving the page and everything on it intact. Pin up a finished sketch, arrange several ideas side by side, or keep works in progress visible as they develop.
What begins on the pad doesn't have to stay there.
The ITO BINDERY × YANKO DESIGN Drawing Pad is made by ITO Bindery, a Japanese bookbindery founded in 1938. Behind its remarkably simple form is a production process still guided by experienced eyes and hands.
Binding glue is applied by hand with a specialized brush, a step entrusted only to experienced craftspeople because the amount and technique affect both how easily the pad opens and how strongly it holds together. Craftspeople check the position and precision of the microperforations to keep that clean tear consistent from sheet to sheet.
Even the staples receive individual attention. After binding, each pad is pressed by hand using dedicated equipment to flatten the protruding staple legs, so they don't scratch the surface beneath the pad.
The recycled cardboard mount has its own story. Early prototypes used rigid cardboard offcuts from inside ITO Bindery's factory. What began as a way to make use of leftover material proved sturdy enough to draw against and brought a distinctive texture of its own. When the Drawing Pad entered production, ITO Bindery chose to preserve that character using similarly recycled cardboard sourced from a paper manufacturer.
For this collaboration, that process ends with one final detail. Each Drawing Pad is individually numbered by hand, with just 100 made in each size for the ITO BINDERY × YANKO DESIGN edition.
What feels simple in your hands is anything but simple in the making.
The Drawing Pad stays out on your desk, already open to the next gray page. Halfway through something else, a thought appears. You reach for a pencil and put it down while it's still clear. A few words might be enough. Other times, one line leads to another until there's something on the page worth exploring.
Later, you come back to something you started earlier. You add a detail, redraw a form, cross something out, or see a direction you hadn't considered before. Maybe it ends there. Maybe you return to it tomorrow. Eventually, some pages become worth pulling from the pad and pinning above your workspace, where you can see several ideas together and decide where to take them next.
Over time, the pages begin to hold the traces of how you think: quick sketches, practical lists, unfinished thoughts, ideas returned to days later, and the occasional one that becomes something much bigger. And sometimes, a page simply holds something you were glad you didn't lose.
